Year 1

Year 1 provides a carefully supported transition from the play-based learning of Reception to the more structured expectations of the National Curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to develop greater independence and confidence while continuing to benefit from purposeful opportunities for play, exploration and collaboration. Strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics are a key priority, with particular emphasis on systematic phonics and reading fluency in preparation for the statutory Phonics Screening Check. Creative, musical and physical opportunities remain an important part of school life. Learning is further enriched through visits to the British Wildlife Centre and The Look Out Discovery Centre.
